ORIGIN STORY:

Sigma Phi Society

Sigma Phi takes great pride in its distinction as the oldest continuously operating social fraternity, dating back to its establishment in 1827. The enduring legacy of Sigma Phi stands as one of its most admirable attributes, and as we approach our bicentennial anniversary, our strength is undiminished.

From its inception, Sigma Phi was envisioned as a tight-knit brotherhood, a vision that remains intact to this day. Expansion to new chapters has been deliberate and selective, occurring only at institutions of the highest caliber. This deliberate growth fosters an intimate environment within Sigma Phi, where the personal development of each member takes precedence, and lifelong friendships are cultivated.

Among the founding members of Sigma Phi was Thomas Bowie, who later served as a representative in the United States Congress. His example set the tone for a tradition of community involvement that continues among brothers today. These contributions span a wide spectrum, reflecting the diverse talents and interests of our members, with many achieving success in fields such as business, academia, and public service.

ORIGIN AT CORNELL:

Sigma Phi Society

The Sigma Phi "The Epsilon Of New York" chapter forms a tight-knit brotherhood, dedicated to upholding excellence in leadership, scholarship, and camaraderie at Cornell University since 1890. Within the intimate setting of Sigma Phi, emphasis is placed on individual development, fostering enduring friendships that extend far beyond the college years.

BROTHERS:

Sigma Phi Is Hard

To Label

Sigma Phi seeks diverse students with shared values. Ideally, students come from a variety of backgrounds, colleges, majors, and interests. More importantly, during their undergraduate careers, students discover new passions, birth new ideas, and see the world and their place in it in creative ways. Here are profiles of recent student members.

The House

One of the impressions formed of Sigma Phi is our striking 1933 residence located at One Forest Park Lane on West Campus.

The exquisite wood paneling, period furnishings, cork floors, and stained glass windows convey the nobility of Sigma Phi and acknowledge its historic roots and legacy.

Ezra slept here! The current home stands atop the foundation of Ezra Cornell's homestead. A wall from Ezra's stable in the basement is a reminder of this origin. Generation of Cornell-trained architects, alumni leadership, and generous alumni donors have ensured that our home at Cornell remains beautiful and functional.

In addition to the traditional residential spaces, Sigma Phi includes a library, a private two-room guest suite, a card room, a sitting room, a squash court, and a spacious back porch facing the Ithaca sunsets.

Life in Sigma Phi is about a comfortable home; delicious meals; hosted events, and casual evenings. Just steps from the center of campus (ok, one steep hill), we return to One Forest Park Lane for lunch, study, sleep, and fun.

Promoting the Enhancement of One Forest Park Lane and Strategic Initiatives

Our aim with this endeavor is to champion a physical environment that all Sigma Phi brothers can take pride in. One Forest Park Lane serves not only as the residence for undergraduate brothers but also as a welcoming destination for Sigma Phi alumni to reconnect with their alma mater, Cornell University.
